In Memory of September 11th

It was one of those magnificent early autumn mornings, sunny, cool and breezy. Having returned from a long delightful walk with my aging dog Pip on the Freedom Path near the Carter Presidential Center, I flipped on the radio in the kitchen, the radio set to NPR.

The commentators were discussing the impact of an airplane into a building; I was only somewhat paying attention thinking they were discussing the FX of some new movie. Gradually realizing something wasn't right, I went into the next room and turned on my television.

Shock! Dismay! Disbelief! My mind could not grasp the horror. I stood transfixed in front of the TV watching, listening. A plane had flown into one of the Towers? What? How? Who? Why? Oh my God all the people in the building, on the plane... Then, along with everyone else watching TV, I heard the sound of an airplane. The camera caught the motion of the plane swooping in low over the city as it unbelievably flew into the second Tower, exploding into flames. Oh my God! This can't be real!! What about all the people??

I am crying as I write this.

My mind did not want to believe what it had just seen. How could this be real? What about all the people, oh my God! Who could be so insane as to do this?

I called my daughters, told them what was going on, to turn on the TV, to stay home and be safe. I wanted to talk to my Dad, he could always help to make sense of the world but he had passed away in December. I was so upset that my daughters and my baby granddaughter were in two different cities and I could not have them with me. Was it safe to drive, should I go get them? Fear! Panic!

The news of the plane crashing into the Pentagon. The news of the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. Oh my God. Oh my God. Are all these people dead? Who could do something so evil??

The time line is somewhat jumbled in my mind. I know I could not move away from the TV, so I was watching 'live' as people were jumping out of the Towers, oh! God Bless those poor souls, so horrific! And watching as each of the Towers collapsed. More disbelief! Horror! How could those buildings just collapse like that, were there bombs at the base? Oh my God all the people dying!!

At the time I was living on the outskirts of Atlanta and was terrified that planes would soon begin crashing into the tall buildings downtown. Would we all be reduced to rubble during this day?

The hours and days are a blur. I don't remember eating, don't remember going anywhere. I remember watching news coverage, watching Oprah. And for days and days watching the funerals on TV, hearing the bagpipes play 'Amazing Grace' again and again; the overwhelming sadness of all the people who had died!!

I also vividly remember how QUIET the world was for days after, there were no planes flying, it wasn't allowed. The quiet was eerie, uncomfortable and alien.

Then one day Oprah said something like: we all need to stop being fearful, pull away from the TV and resume living our lives. It really was great advice. It seemed as if I had been holding my breath for hours, days, waiting for the world to blow up, explode. I had been given 'permission' to live again. I exhaled.

The Sandy Springs Art Festival was to be on September 17th, 2001, and I was a jewelry artist vendor for the event. The committee decided not to cancel the event, to go ahead with the festival, to make it as patriotic as possible, and was it ever! The Annual Animal Parade was marvelous, owners and their pets decked out in Red/White/Blue most likely outdoing any 4th of July show! And the citizens of Sandy Springs turned out in droves to support the festival, to support America!

During the afternoon of the festival, we all heard the sound of an airplane. What? How? No airplanes!! It was as if everyone had taken in one collective breath and holding it in anticipation of... Artists, vendors came out of their tents, shoppers, even children all looked up at the plane that was flying low and slow heading right over our location. We all watched as a military plane went overhead and kept on going, low and slow. And then one collective exhale, a sigh of relief, as we all realized the plane was staying airborne, we were safe, the festivities resumed.

Ten Years Later. Is there anyone else like myself who has not recovered from this, just from viewing the events live on TV? I still cry just seeing photographs of this day. All the lives lost! The horror of the events! Senseless madness!

How can we say we are 'civilized' when we continue to participate in wars, when terrorism thrives around the globe?

I am sending peaceful, healing energy into the world in Memory of September 11th. Please join me.

Happy Two Years to Max the Cat

Happy Two Years to Max the Cat ~ he's such a big sweetie!

Max was appropriately named after the little boy Max in "Where the Wild Things Are" ~ and he still lives up to the mischievous name.

Max is always on the tallest furniture, or hiding under the bed so he can grab a leg as you walk by.

Max has been with me since birth~ his mom is my lovely cat Goldie who gave birth in a drawer on my RV!

Max was the cutest little kitten, and now a very handsome cat!

Happy Birthday, Max!

The whole world is watching.

I had a strange dream last night, one of those dreams that stays with you. In this dream I was speaking with a gathering of people. The setting was a combination of reality, cartoon-ish-ness and a scene from “The Neverending Story” movie, complete with an amazing group of characters representing the world, or maybe the galaxy.

Like in my previous dreams the Underlying Theme is that we are now a global people, all decisions must be made on a global basis. We can no longer afford to make choices based on each separate country’s needs, or greed.

{The following is a very simplistic view of events as presented in my dream.}

The Current Urgent Theme is to end this farce of a war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The war was in retaliation of the Sept 11th attack on our nation; our retribution was the bombing of Afghanistan. And, the search for Osama Bin Laden was begun. From that point on, the lines of truth and reality became blurred, and the USA attacked Iraq.

We all know now that there were no weapons of mass destruction. So why are we still fighting? Why are human beings dying for this farce of a war? Why are the USA people and the USA economy suffering for this conflict?

Afghanistan has been bombed. Osama Bin Laden has been killed. Retaliation has been completed.

The whole world is watching. We are global. Every country is aware of each other’s activities. The whole world is watching how the USA is managing, or mismanaging, her affairs.

It is truly beyond time to end the war, to bring home all the soldiers.

It is truly beyond time to refocus on the USA people, the USA economy, and to make our country strong again.

How better to assist the global process than by doing just that: Make our own people and our country strong again.

The shame will not be in retreating from this war, the shame will be continuing this farce of a war; a war that will not only kill more human beings but kill the USA economy and our place as a global leader as well.

It is time to show integrity within leadership: End the war, now.

Love & Peace,

~Gilannie~

A Lesson Learned In My Garden

Weeding Out Toxic Plants, Toxic People

Forgiveness, a difficult subject. Most of us have been injured, harmed, maybe even betrayed by another human being at some point in our lives. We all handle forgiveness in different ways, over varying lengths of time.

There is a step beyond forgiveness, at least for me, which is: Do I want to be around this human being anymore? I have pondered this for quite some time. It has worried me. After all, if one has forgiven and forgotten, shouldn't the waters return to a calmness?

Can everyone be forgiven? Can all situations be forgotten? Sometimes the harming human being has become what I call a 'toxic person' - toxic to one's spirit, toxic to one's creativity, maybe even toxic to one's sanity - as toxic as a poison.

The toxic person has apparently never learned to be kind, never learned to speak with encouragement, never learned to treat others with respect. The toxic person may continue to offend with obscene comments, with abusive remarks, with extremely cruel comments, with betrayals.

A lesson learned in my garden: If I nurture my garden by removing toxic weeds, can I nurture my spirit by removing toxic people?

Yes, I now believe it is the only sane solution - forgive and forget, but keep myself a safe distance from any toxic people; they simply are not allowed into my life.

Now I envision My Spirit as a Beautiful Garden - a garden only I can nurture, weeding out toxic plants, toxic people.

Wishing a beautiful Springtime for us all. ~Love & Peace~

Welcome to February!

~Happy Groundhog Day~

Happy Groundhog Day! Here in Georgia our famous groundhog, General Lee, made his prediction this morning for an Early Spring! Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvanian groundhog, also predicted an Early Spring this morning!

Personally I always wish for a prediction of 'early' spring. By this time every year I am so ready to once again dig in the dirt, plant and nurture seedlings and watch my garden grow.

Yesterday I saw Daffodil Leaves emerging from the ground, leaves already 3"-5" tall. Also there are little sprouts of bee balm, lemon balm and mint in my container garden! The sight was quite amazing considering the unusual freezing weather and highly unusual inches of snow this winter.

In anticipation of the arrival of Spring, I am working on new Jewelry pieces perfect for Spring; pieces that contain the Colors, the Magic of Springtime.

Spring, my favorite time of year! Song birds return filling the air with music! Leaves and buds sprout making 'spring green' the foremost color of the day. A Magical time of year. I hope that Magic is captured in my New Jewelry. Here are the first new items:

Springtime Bluebird Necklace Handmade

My Lucky Penny Charm Good Luck Necklace Handmade

Blue-Green Victorian Pendant Pearl Choker Necklace Handmade

Butterfly Rebirth of Spring Bracelet Handmade

Bird of Spring Cloisonne Necklace Handmade

Amethyst Jade Fluorite Angel Necklace Handmade

Spring will arrive at the right time. Until then I will be patient, make plans for my garden, create new Jewelry and enjoy the Magic of every day.

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." — Roald Dahl

Happy February! ~Gilannie~
